Bakunawa

Work In Progress / 16 January 2019

I've wanted to work on a dragon for quite the longest time already. I've had several ideas in mind but suddenly thought of Bakunawa. Bakunawa is a dragon from the Filipino myth and resembles more of a sea serpent.  I thought this would be a good opportunity to make a dragon, give a different look to my our myth's dragon!

It's quite famous for flying off and trying to eat the moon hence the cause of eclipses. Back then Filipino tribes used to make noise with their pans and pots. Some would even play soothing music to make Bakunawa fall asleep.

Now this version of mine isn't going to fly to space to eat the moon but what if it has a powerful breach that it looked like it was going to fly off hence the myth?

These are some rough ideas I've had and had 2 initial ideas which was to make it look like a flying fish or draw inspiration from a manta for its silhouette. I chose the manta in the end instead of a typical flying fish and now I'm just figuring out how to make it look like it can "fly" aka breach like a manta.

I've been reading bout hammerheads lately and love that they have a 180 vision on one eye. So I thought I'd play around with the design. It's unique head also is sensitive to sonar and used to ram its prey which would be handy for something this huge hunting whales. Still contemplating on whether to retain the eyes on the sides like a hammerhead or put it below.

Since it lives deep underwater I though I'd give it a Bioluminescent body to lure whales that think the lights are fish/squid patterns. Maybe it also uses its light to woo female versions of its kind? Don't know yet.
